9 grams of carbs an hour

An interesting perspective:

There is no reason to ever go off a low carb way of eating, you slowly re introduce carbs to your way of eating and as long as you don't exceed 9grams of carbs an hour (144 carbs a day) you won't trigger insulin (the fat storage hormone) no matter the calories. Most of us do low carb most of the time & if we cheat & slip back into low carb the next day. I still cheat with sugar occasionally. It's just not a regular part of my life (as it was preAtkins, 6 years ago, when I felt it controlled me & I had no control)

... and later on,

this ...

You will lose more body fat eating protein and fat (don't eat protein alone) than not eating AT ALL. To lose weight fast eat all you want but nothing but meat, eggs, healthy oils, mayo, butter and half an avocado a day (you'll need added potassium). Keep the calories high and the fat percentage high, at least 65% of calories. Adding in green vegetables & some cheese will continue weight loss but at a slower pace

I recommend reading the whole answer. But as with everything we read, don't take it as true. Do your own research too :)

And to think, I just wanted to know How many carbs in a carrot!

What Losing 280 Pounds Looks Like: An Unbelievable Before and After

From: Food Is Fuel And he did it by eating bacon, eggs and pork belly!

A few other tidbits I thought worth commenting on:

Carb Dieting Levels

CarbsDiet Name
< 100gLow Carb Diet
< 50gKetogenic Diet
0gCrazy-assed how-do-I-achieve-that! No-Carb Diet*
* - Ok. I had to guess at that last one because he couldn't remember the name that had been used

About seeing it through

  • Don't need goals. Don't need perfection. You can chase perfection without trying to be perfect!
  • When you screw up, don't get hung up. Just look at what went wrong and try to fix it
  • Don't look to the time it will take. Look to the things you will have/do when you're done

And whilst we're on the subject...

... of using the Paleo/Low Carb, High Fat/Wheat-free diet to focus on weight loss...

Recently I haven't been having as much success (re: weight loss) as I might have hoped. A friend suggested that I start writing down everything that I was eating and engage in a bit of analysis to see what I might be doing wrong. Well I can say that even before I got half-way through the first day of writing things down, I started to see the problem. I hadn't ever sat down to work out exactly how many carbs I was getting with some foods, but a little bit of google-fu took care of that.

The Conclusion:

Whilst what we were doing was good, it turns out it was definitely in the "Low-Carb" range, rather than the "Ketogenic" range. This was because I was underestimating just how many carbs you intake if you include milk (morning smoothie), coffee* (at least three) and fruit and nuts (snacks). These things are certainly not bad, but if we want to achieve ketosis, we'll have to rethink our approach.

* - again, for the milk intake: I can't stand black coffee

On the other hand, for now we will probably decide that a Low-Carb diet is sufficient: We still get to enjoy many different foods without ever feeling we're going without. Weight-loss will in all likelihood still occur, but over a much slower time frame. In the meantime, I think the best parts of our diet are:

  • we've virtually eliminated wheat-based products from our diet.
  • we're enjoying great-tasting banana and berry smoothies
  • we're enjoying the odd drop of wine and even port

Nutritional Ketosis

In case you haven't seen it yet, It's possible this refit forum might be encouraging/useful. Its a cross between a self-help/encouragement forum and a recipe sharing forum. I was reading it quite regularly for a while.

Seeing so many other people doing the same thing, sharing their experiences, is quite interesting.

Neanderthin (Paleo) life style

An excellent straightforward introduction to the Paleolithic Diet. (Many of my food suggested started with the lists from this site)

Some quotes from this site:

"Consider something: the low-fat hysteria is at an all-time high, yet more and more people are getting fat. Something just doesn't FIT"

"Carbohydrate is just a techical or generic word for what lay men call "sugar" or "starch", nothing more, nothing less. It isn't strictly necessary for humans, and it should only be eaten in the amounts present in vegetables and fruit. Protein can be converted to carbohydrate by the body on a need-to-have basis, but it doesn't cause blood sugar spikes."

"When you're trying to lose weight eat only when you're hungry - don't eat for fun (except occasionally)"

"Your body will be more conditioned to burning fat for energy when you stop relying on sugar/starch/complex carbohydrates for energy. This may aid your weight loss ...as the body will have no resistance to losing your fat stores, but it is not scientifically known - or rather that last part seems to have quite some support now due to Gary Taubes' brilliant work. Most likely, when your body adapts to the new diet you'll just feel better."

"Insulin is a special player. It's a hormone primarily responsible for eliminating blood sugar from your blood. Its secondary function is to transport amino acids to your muscles, and also to store fat. When you eat bread or a baked potato you cause a sudden, dramatic rise in blood sugar, and your body responds by frantically producing insulin to remove this dangerous substance from your veins."

"Coffee is not allowed on the paleo diet, but most people drink it anyway"

What started it all for me
